Free Press Mission Statement:

The University of Southern Maine Free Press is a community newspaper written and produced for an audience of students, staff and faculty, created by a team of USM students. We provide the news about our university and its community to our audience in a weekly print newspaper. We will justify our name by providing a public forum for free exchange of information and ideas within a university community of diverse viewpoints, goals and directions.

The spaces, services, and resources of The Learning Commons are designed to foster collaborative and active learning. Located in the University of Southern Maine Libraries, The Learning Commons is also home to USM's peer academic support services. In addition to subject-based tutoring, we offer academic coaching, technology assistance, and research guidance, as well as reservable group study spaces and community computers.

Vision
Orientation & First Year Experience at The University of Southern Maine (USM) is committed to supporting and equipping students for success in life and at USM inside and outside of the classroom, especially during students' first year as a Husky.

Orientation & First Year Experience innovates to be responsive to shifting needs of today's students and society to be a leader in orientation, retention and transition practices.

Mission
The Office of Orientation & First Year Experience connects new Huskies, from all backgrounds, to opportunities and resources on and off campus. This enhances their experience as members of the USM community and allows them to explore dynamic curricular and co-curricular engagement throughout their time at USM preparing them with skills and perspective to be successful in life beyond their time as students.

We offer a variety of collaborative Orientation programs. These programs begin upon acceptance and continue throughout a Husky's first year in the USM community. We strive to offer programs which resonate with and welcome all new huskies, and honors their experiences, perspectives, and identities as they join the USM community.

Mission
The Promise Scholarship is designed to help underserved young achievers from Maine overcome financial, academic, social, and cultural barriers, remain in school, and graduate in four years with little or no debt — prepared to make their own contributions to Maine’s social and economic well-being. Our program supports up to 100 scholars every year – approximately 25 in each class – with top-off, multi-year scholarship awards that covers 100% of a scholar’s demonstrated need, as determined by the FAFSA, in meeting the cost of tuition, fees, housing, and meals. The Promise Scholarship award amount varies by student and is on-top of a scholar’s other aid including federal, state, and institutional grants and scholarships. The Promise Scholarship program is designed to enable students to graduate in four years with minimal to no debt.

Student Engagement & Leadership at the University of Southern Maine, with a focus on applied learning and retention, implements programs and services to:

1) Meet the needs of residential, commuter, online, and graduate students, across all modalities, including Gorham, Portland, and Lewiston-Auburn campuses, online, and surrounding communities.

2) Develop a holistic approach to leadership skills that encourages personal growth, self-advocacy, and positive contributions in clubs, organizations, and communities.

3) Engage students by providing academic and social opportunities through new experiences, building connections, and fostering a sense of belonging.
Continue to build a culture focused on inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility in a safe and welcoming environment with no barriers.

4) Advocate for student needs and passions as advisors/mentors through collaboration with students, university resources, and community partnerships to enhance the student experience.

The USM Art Gallery serves the most diverse population of any Maine institution of higher learning, and it is known for its rich blend of contemporary art exhibitions, lectures, events, and Artist-in-Residence community projects. Our exhibitions in Gorham and Portland showcase art students’ multidisciplinary projects in a range of media, as well as regional collaborations and curated themes with socially engaged public programming that underscores USM’s broadly inclusive mission.
